Working together to achieve great things

The National Metabolomics Platform (NMP), in partnership with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an entity of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) is hosted at NWU’s Centre for Human Metabolomics (CHM). The NMP was established to fulfil a niche in the South African Healthcare sector by providing internationally competitive, effective, and efficient Metabolomics Analytic Services.

The NMP* is at the forefront of promoting and maximising scientific technological advancements for the benefit of all.

*Services were formerly provided as PLIEM – Potchefstroom Laboratory for Inborn Errors of Metabolism.

The MISSION of CHM is to provide analytical, training and consultancy services in accordance with the best applicable standards, as well as to deliver valuable research outputs, meeting the requirements and expectations of its customers and the NWU.  The management and staff of CHM undertake to ensure that all activities carried out are in strict accordance with the laboratory’s SOP’s and comply with the ISO 15189 requirements for all testing.

The VISION of the CHM is to be an ISO 15189 accredited facility that addresses a specific need in the South African and international health sector and to be a globally recognised expert centre for inherited metabolic disease and metabolomics services.

The National Metabolomics Platform is a specialized laboratory dedicated to diagnosing rare and inherited metabolic diseases. Located on the Potchefstroom campus of North-West University, the laboratory may occasionally require additional tests, including genetic testing, to confirm a diagnosis. If these tests incur additional costs, the laboratory will seek prior approval from you and/or your clinician. To ensure diagnostic accuracy, clinical information and other reports may also be requested. Such requests are made solely to enhance the precision of the diagnosis. Following a diagnosis, the laboratory may contact you about potential research projects for which you might be eligible. These projects aim to improve the understanding and characterization of rare diseases and offer patients opportunities to participate in international clinical trials. Participation in these projects is entirely voluntary, and there is no obligation to take part if contacted. All research is conducted under the oversight of the NWU Health Research Ethics Committee.
